ABOUT THE GAME
24/7 unlimited open-world play — compete for glory
What Is Asteroid Dominion?
Asteroid Dominion is an online, multiplayer space game inspired by classic arcade games and modern .io games — but built with persistent data and player progression. No downloads. No installs. Just open your browser and fly.
The galaxy runs 24/7. There are no matches, no lobbies, no waiting. When you sign in, you're dropped into a living world where hundreds of asteroids drift under gravity, AI-controlled ships patrol faction territories, and other players are mining, fighting, building, and competing for the top of the leaderboard.
Choose a faction. Upgrade your ship. Claim asteroids. Build defenses. Climb the ranks. Or go rogue as an Outlaw and answer to no one.
What makes this game different from the dozen other browser-based shooters you've seen? Three things, mostly. The galaxy is persistent — your structures, your level, your reputation all carry forward between sessions. The flight model is four-engine asymmetric thrust rather than the usual twin-stick — once it clicks, the precision and the expressiveness of movement is something we genuinely haven't seen in another browser game. And the faction system isn't cosmetic; each side fundamentally changes how you fight, what your harpoon does, who's standing next to you, and what counts as a win.
The World
The galaxy is roughly 22,000 by 22,000 units of open space. That's big — large enough that the four faction home sectors (north, east, south, west) sit far enough apart that crossing from one to another is itself a real journey. Big enough that asteroid fields can be genuinely empty pockets of the map. Big enough for ambush and for escape.
Hundreds of asteroids drift through this space at any moment, ranging from tiny chunks to massive monoliths (radius 160) large enough to host a small base on their surface. Asteroids respond to gravity and provide both physical cover and economic income. Wormholes punctuate the four cardinal axes — visually striking gravity wells that pull harder during the storm phase of the gravity cycle and become genuine hazards.
The galaxy's gravity isn't constant. It cycles through six 90-second phases — mostly normal, with a calm 0.5x lull and a 1.5x storm each lap, for a roughly nine-minute cycle. It creates session rhythm — predictable danger windows interleaved with safe transit windows. Experienced pilots plan their actions around the cycle the way a sailor plans around tides.
Layered on top of the gravity cycle is the Bonefall — a ~15-minute interval event during which the Bone Collector swarm activates in force, its numbers swelling as every Bone Collector goes hunting, and combat density spikes. The Bonefall is the recurring "something is happening right now" moment that interrupts routine and creates opportunity for big plays.
The Four Factions
Every player chooses a faction on each respawn from the three playable sides — Concordium, Unbound and Outlaw; the Bone Collectors are an AI-only swarm you fight rather than join. The factions aren't cosmetic — each one has a unique harpoon ability that fundamentally changes how you engage other ships, a different home sector, and a meaningfully different playstyle.
- Concordium — The Law. North sector. Harpoon ability: ARREST (lock down an enemy's engine and weapons for 2.5 seconds). Coordinated team play; the closest thing to a legitimate authority in the galaxy.
- Unbound — The Free Traders. East sector. Harpoon ability: LOOT (drain an enemy's stored materials at 10% of their cargo per second). Mine, claim, fortify, repeat. The economic faction.
- Bone Collectors — The Swarm. South sector. Harpoon ability: EAT (AI-only; drains health bypassing shields). Five AI ships in their sector for every one anywhere else. Sheer numbers.
- Outlaws — The Lone Wolves. West sector. Harpoon ability: LOOT. No teammates, no allies, no shared kills. Everyone is your enemy and your target. Overrepresented at the top of the leaderboard.
The factions page goes deep on each one — strategy, counter-strategy, who tends to play them, and why.
Key Features
- Persistent World — The galaxy never stops. Your progress, your structures, your rank — they're all waiting when you come back.
- Four Factions — Concordium (law enforcement), Unbound (free traders), Bone Collectors (the swarm), and Outlaws (lone wolves). Each with unique abilities.
- Ship Customization — 8 upgradeable stat categories. Build a tank, a glass cannon, a mining rig, or a balanced all-rounder.
- Three Weapons — Bullets for damage, harpoon for towing and faction abilities, mining laser for resources.
- Base Building — Claim asteroids, build ANTI-AIR turrets, defend your territory, with new structure types added in regular updates.
- AI Autopilot — Set your ship to Mine, Patrol, Defend, or Build while you focus on strategy.
- Dynamic Events — Gravity storms, Bonefalls, and hit-list bounties keep every session unpredictable.
- Play Anywhere — Desktop and mobile. Same game, same galaxy, same experience. No app download required.
Design Philosophy
A handful of principles drove every design decision in Asteroid Dominion. They're worth naming because they explain why the game looks and feels the way it does.
Accessibility first. Browser-only. No download, no install, no patch days. You can play on any computer, tablet, or phone you have access to. We took this constraint seriously — the entire game ships under 5 MB of code total and loads in seconds even on slow connections. The mobile UI isn't an afterthought; it's a full-fidelity alternative control scheme that competes at the top of the leaderboard alongside desktop players.
Server-authoritative everything. Every physics calculation, every collision, every damage tick happens on the server. The client is a renderer, not a source of truth. This makes the game expensive to run (we pay for that compute) and it makes the game impossible to cheat. There is no aimbot worth writing for Asteroid Dominion because the server doesn't trust the client's aim.
One galaxy, no resets. Persistent worlds are a content-design choice, not a technical one. We chose persistence because it makes individual sessions feel like they matter. The structure you build now is the structure that's there when a stranger flies past it tomorrow. The level you earn this week is the level you have next month. We don't wipe. We don't season-reset. The galaxy is one galaxy, and it keeps running.
Skill ceiling over hand-holding. The four-engine flight model is harder to learn than twin-stick. The fuel-shield mechanic punishes carelessness. The hit-list bounty system means winning makes you a target. These are deliberate tensions, not bugs. We respect players enough to give them a system that rewards mastery rather than smoothing every edge.
Free, with ads, sustainably. The free tier exists permanently. Ads support the free tier. Subscribers (8-day free trial, $9.99/month after, US-only) skip the ads and skip the queue when the galaxy is full. The subscription isn't pay-to-win — subscribers have no in-game advantage other than not seeing ad screens. That distinction matters to us.
The Studio
Sandbox Studios LLC — "Where your game is never over"
Sandbox Studios is an independent game studio registered in Oklahoma, focused on building browser-based multiplayer games that anyone can play, anywhere, without barriers. It is also one person. Asteroid Dominion is its first and current title — a passion project that grew from a simple canvas experiment into a persistent-world multiplayer game across more than two thousand six hundred tested versions.
The pace is unusual for an indie studio, and it is deliberate. Updates ship most days, sometimes several times a day, and every version is exactly one tested change — so when something breaks, it traces to a single version and gets fixed forward. Performance work, gameplay tuning, new features, and bug fixes all move through the same pipeline. The player-facing summary lives at Release Notes.
Great games should be accessible. No $60 price tag. No 50GB download. No gaming PC required. Just a browser and an internet connection. Asteroid Dominion is the test of whether that belief produces a game people actually want to play. So far, the answer has been yes.
About the Sandbox Studios Team
Sandbox Studios is one person. Zeke is the solo developer — design, code, art direction, servers, roadmap, and the 2 a.m. hotfixes.
Everyone below him is either a real dog, a real player, or a deliberate costume, and it is labeled as such. Every portrait on this page is AI-generated. Jaine Star and Zain Star are AI studio characters — twins, and the AI is sitting in their names on purpose. They are not employees and they are not a press office. No human works here but me. I write, approve, and answer for every public word this studio says.
Honest headcount: one developer, one Jack Russell terrier with a serious bone habit, and a volume of coffee that would concern a physician. Everything else on this page is a helmet or a bit.
Builds the game, runs the roadmap, and ships a tested change most days of the week — sometimes several. Every asteroid, every turret, and every line of physics in the galaxy came through this desk. He is the engineer of record: if it is in the galaxy, he can tell you why it is there and what it does. He does not do interviews, he does not do photos, and the mug is not a joke.
Announces things. The game's public voice on social media and in release posts, broadcasting live from somewhere that does not exist. Keeping you up to date is all Jaine's doing — which is to say it is Zeke's doing, in Jaine's jacket. Jaine is an AI character, not a press contact. For anything a human needs to answer, it was always Zeke.
Owns your first ten minutes: the getting-started path, the in-game tutorial clips, and every patient explanation of why your ship is drifting sideways. A brand-new pilot who has the four-engine flight model figured out inside a minute is Zain doing the job right. Zain is an AI character. The tutorials are Zeke's, recorded at this desk.
Three helmets, no payroll. Right now the Squadron is friends, family, and players from Reddit who fly into walls deliberately, harpoon things that were never meant to be harpooned, and text at two in the morning about it. They test the limits of the game and of Zeke's will to live, and the galaxy is measurably better for both. The helmets are a badge, not three specific people — and the roster is open. If you report something that gets fixed, that was you.
In-house morale officer and full-time bone collector. The job description is gnawing, and River is exceptional at it. Whether River named the faction or the faction named River is a matter of some dispute around here.
We know Asteroid Dominion will not be everyone's favorite game. We want it to be your favorite game — and that part is not something we can do from this side of the screen. A ship that feels sluggish, a panel you cannot read on your phone, a mechanic you would build differently, an idea nobody here has had yet: we want all of it.
We ship a tested change most days of the week, so a Monday accepted suggestion is often flying by the weekend. Good games become great ones when the people building them listen to the people playing them. Come tell us what to fix.
Join us on DiscordHow Asteroid Dominion Is Made
This is a one-person studio that uses modern tools, and I would rather tell you exactly which ones than let you guess.
The game. Every system that ships — the four-engine flight model, combat, mining, harpoons, claiming and building, the four factions, persistence, the netcode, and the Azure deployment — is designed, directed, reviewed, and tested here. Implementation is done with AI assistance, under my direction: I read the code, I change it, I run a 498-suite regression board against it, and I ship it one tested version at a time. I do not ship code I cannot explain. When it breaks, it is mine to fix, and the changelog is a public record of me doing exactly that.
The art. Procedural. There are almost no image files in this game — the ships, asteroids, turrets, explosions, and UI are drawn by code, to my design, every frame. Nothing was scraped and nothing was diffusion-generated. The exceptions are the studio portraits on this page, which are AI-generated and labeled.
The sound effects. Synthesized in code. All 108 of them are oscillators, noise, and envelopes running in the browser's audio engine — no sample packs, no generated audio files, no sound lifted from another game. I auditioned and picked every one.
The music. The four in-game tracks were generated with an AI audio tool. I wrote the briefs — tempo, length, no vocals, faction character, and an explicit list of what not to sound like — generated candidates, rejected most of them, and chose and placed the survivors against specific moments: the Bonefall attack, the death screen, the long haul. I directed and selected this music. I did not compose it, I am not claiming I did, and I make no claim of copyright in the raw generations. Nothing was prompted to imitate a living artist or an existing record, and anything that came back sounding like something I recognized was thrown out.
What happens when this works — with numbers, so you can hold me to it. At 200 subscribers, which is just past the point where the game pays its own server bill, I commission a human composer and the generated tracks come out. At 500, marketing goes to a human partner and the twins go back to being what they always were: a bit. Neither of those is the number where this becomes my full-time job — the composer gets paid well before I do. Generated music and an AI marketing department are what a studio of one can afford today. They are not what it wants.
Composers: do not wait for the trigger. If you write music and this sounds like work you would want, mail me at asteroiddominion@gmail.com. I would rather know who you are before I can pay you than go looking afterward.
In-game "AI" is not this. The bots, the Bone Collectors, the autopilot, and the faction opposition are game logic I wrote and keep tuning. That is the adversary inside the simulation, not a model generating the game.
If you want to judge the project, judge the galaxy: does it play, does it hold state, is it fair, is it maintained. The tooling is not the product. What you fly is the product.
Continually Improving
Asteroid Dominion ships continual advancements and improvements, with new content released every week. The galaxy keeps growing, and areas we are actively expanding include:
- New structure types. ANTI-AIR is available now. BASE (central material storage and fuel conversion), MINE (passive resource extraction), SPACE HANGAR (drones and support ships), FENCE (barriers between claimed rocks), and SHIELD (energy field around an asteroid) extend the territory game and roll out in regular updates.
- More daily highscore categories. Top Kill, Biggest Single-Life Score, and Longest Survival cover three obvious angles. Others — most asteroids mined in a day, longest harpoon chain, most structures destroyed — are added in ongoing updates.
- Cross-galaxy expansion. The architecture supports multiple parallel galaxies if and when player count justifies it. The first additional galaxy will spin up automatically once the existing galaxy reaches sustained capacity.
- Faction-specific cosmetics. Same ship physics for everyone, but visual differentiation between factions beyond just color tint.
- Friend-finding for subscribers. Subscribers can look up where a friend is currently playing and join that galaxy.
New content ships continually, week after week. Follow @Sand_Box_Studio on X or join the Discord to see each update as it lands.
